Former Pasco Mayor Matt Watkins took some time off to discover the world after 16 years on the City Council. His “discoveries” included Covid in Southeast Asia, war in Eastern Europe, and walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

2023 Tri-Cities Polar Plunge – January 21, 2023

The Special Olympics Washington Polar Plunge, on Saturday, January 21, is a Tri-Cities tradition. The annual event brings together supporters throughout the area to Get Cold for a Cause. The 2023 installment of this Winter Beach Party is expanding to offer something for everyone. Partygoers can show up to plunge or participate in the festivities and cheer others on.
Attendees can expect a full-on beach party with live music, beach games, hot tubs, food trucks, costume contests, and great prizes along the way! Individual and team registrants are encouraged to raise donations in support of Special Olympics Washington athletes. As they raise funds, they can also earn prizes including airline vouchers and Papa John’s gift cards for the top individual and team fundraisers.
The Polar Plunge campaign kicks off the year strong by raising funds that directly go to providing athletes with year-round opportunities to train and compete, as well as receive free health screenings and leadership training. Proceeds from the event ensure that over 7,500 Washington children and adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities have the opportunity to participate at no cost to them.
On Saturday, January 21, festivities kick off at 9:00 a.m. at Columbia Point Marina Park in Richland. The costume contest will begin at 11:15 a.m., with winners awarded based on crowd response. Polar plunging starts at noon, with warm-up hot tub dips to follow.

Benton Conservation District in partnership with the Columbia Basin Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society has developed a
program designed to honor the cultural and natural heritage of the Columbia River Basin while utilizing sustainable gardening practices. Heritage Gardens promote low-water-use landscaping with native plants to create beautiful wildlife friendly landscapes. Join us to learn how this program was developed, how it has grown and to take a virtual tour of established gardens.
Heather Wendt is a conservationist and the co-creator of the Heritage Garden (HG) Program. She is also the co-author of the Plant Selection Guide, Heritage Gardens of the Columbia River Basin. Heather has worked for conservation districts since 1997. She currently serves as the Assistant Manager for both the Benton and Franklin Conservation Districts, and she is responsible for coordinating the Heritage Garden Program in Benton, Franklin, Kittitas, and Yakima Counties.
