Over 230 species of waterfowl, songbirds, raptors and shorebirds have been documented in a variety of habitats. Up to 60 species are typically found on a Saturday walk.

Lisa Hill and other knowledgeable birders lead a walk on the first Saturday of the month from September through June. Bird enthusiasts of all experience levels are welcome, especially beginning birders.

Columbia Basin Badger Club Annual Meeting and Forum: “Big Time College Football – What about WSU” – January 18, 2024

Virtual online via Zoom
From 11:30 a.m.. – 1:00 p.m.
Cost: $5 for non members – must register

College football and basketball are popular spectator sports that have undergone remarkable changes in the past 3 years. These changes include a shift from regional to coast-to-coast conferences. The fact that approximately 7,000 athletes generate more than $6 billion in revenue has led to calls that these athletes receive a fairer share of that revenue. The US Supreme Court weighed in on this issue in 2021, and further changes are anticipated.

These changes have a big impact on regional college sports, particularly Washington State University. Last year WSU was a proud member of the Pac-12 conference, one of the 5 most powerful conferences in the nation. Now all conference members are leaving except for WSU and Oregon State.

Our forum will examine the past and future from two perspectives. The first is from the athlete – a voice rarely heard in the national discussions about these issues. We have invited Dean Janikowski who has been the kicker for the WSU Cougars for the past 3 seasons to discuss what the life of a Division 1 athlete is like and how changes in the sports landscape will affect future athletes. In addition, Jeff Morrow, former sports editor of the Tri-City Herald, will provide perspective on the dissolution of the Pac-12 and what the future might hold for WSU athletics.

Lecture Series: “The Oldest Hatred: Coming to Terms with Antisemitism” – January 18, 2024

Kennewick Branch – Mid-Columbia Libraries, 1620 S. Union Street in Kennewick
Starts at 7 p.m.
Free to participate

In 2021, 82 percent of American Jews said antisemitism had risen over the last five years, while only 44 percent of the general public believed that to be the case. How can we account for this striking difference?

Antisemitism is sometimes called “the oldest hatred,” and this talk will show how religious and racial prejudice shaped Jewish experience over millennia and came to unite diverse Jewish people around the world. Topics will include the origins of Jewish stereotypes, how antisemitism intersects with white nationalism, and the difference between critiques of the Israeli government and discrimination against Jews. Attendees will gain new knowledge and understanding about antisemitism along with strategies to address it.

Nancy Koppelman (she/her) has been a professor of American studies and humanities at The Evergreen State College for 28 years, where she currently leads the Evergreen Jewish Studies Project. She holds an M.A. in history from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in American studies from Emory University. PP Koppelman lives in Olympia.
