First Saturday Bird Walk – March 2, 2024

The First Saturday bird walk will start at Wye Parking Lot off Columbia Park Trail in Richland
Starts at 8 a.m.

We are happy to announce that Bateman Island is once again open to the public – so join us for birding as we explore the island and surrounding waters.

Bateman Island is a major birding hotspot in the Mid-Columbia. Located at the confluence of the Yakima and Columbia Rivers, the island and surrounding waters are teeming with a huge variety of birds and other wildlife throughout the year. Over 230 species of waterfowl, songbirds, raptors and shorebirds have been documented in a variety of habitats. Up to 60 species are typically found on a Saturday walk.

Lisa Hill and other knowledgeable birders lead a walk on the first Saturday of the month from September through June. Bird enthusiasts of all experience levels are welcome, especially beginning birders.

The Black Market Trust is an American pop vocal jazz group from Los Angeles who combine the sounds of the legendary crooners with the fire and energy of Gypsy Jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. LIGO Hanford Observatory Public Tour – March 9, 2024

LIGO Hanford Observatory is pleased to announce that it has resumed its “Second Saturday” free public tours. During your visit you will have a chance to explore many interactive and static exhibits now housed in LHO’s new LIGO Exploration Center (LExC). Tours include a one-hour walking tour of the site, time inside the new LIGO Exploration Center (LExC), and a talk by a staff member. LIGO tours are suitable for all ages. The talks are appropriate for visitors aged 12 and up, but all ages are welcome. Multiple tour times are available for your convenience, please choose the time slot that works best for you when reserving your ticket.

The B-boy Beatdown (Hip Hop Festival) – March 9, 2024

Two long-time participants in the Tri-Cities hip-hop scene are hosting this event that will feature all 4 classic elements of old school hip-hop. The “jam sesh” will be from 1-3 p.m., with the b-boy jam and other competitions to follow.

The event include a graffiti display, vinyl DJ performances, freestyle competitions, an emcee showcase, after party and other competitions. Past 6 p.m., drinks will be catered by The Emerald of Siam. There is also $2,500 in prizes up for grabs.

In 1943 and beyond women answered the call to participate in the war work in the hot, dry, and dusty conditions of southeastern Washington at the Hanford Engineer Works. Their contributions were largely unknown; their names (almost!) lost to history.

Join us as we honor the women who supported the mission. With backgrounds as diverse as the roles they played, these women embodied the “Spirit of H.E.W.” and saw the job through. Meet Berniece, Olga, Hester, Anne, Florance, Leona and more as we highlight their unique stories.

Columbia Basin Badger Club Forum: Measures of Race and Ethnicity in the Tri-Cities – March 21, 2024

More than forty percent of the population of Benton and Franklin Counties as people of color. A third of us identify as Hispanic. Nearly thirty percent do not speak English at home. Often, the family depends on a grade-schooler to translate everything from medical instructions to teacher conferences. What do we know about these new neighbors? About their needs and aspirations?

On Thursday March 21, the Columbia Basin Badger Club will present Dr. Patrick Jones, Executive Director of the Institute of Public Policy and Economic Analysis at Eastern Washington University.  Dr. Jones will share new information on Measures of Race and Ethnicity in the Tri-Cities.

We’ve also invited a panel of distinguished leaders of our local minority communities to add that all-important lived experience.

We have all heard of J. Robert Oppenheimer and Enrico Fermi, but what about Leona Woods Marshall Libby, Lilli Hornig, Floy Agnes Lee, Frances Dunne, or the Calutron Girls? From the discovery of nuclear fission to the creation of nuclear weapons, women played many critical and often overlooked roles in the secret government program that helped end World War II.

This presentation will highlight the accomplishments of women scientists and engineers during the Manhattan Project, including who those women were and what they did. This presentation is sponsored by the Society of Women of Engineers- Eastern Washington chapter.

Grace Kitchen is hosting a Flashback 5k in Howard Amon Park on March 23. The Race for Grace-Flashback 5k is an ’80’s themed walk/run in support of Grace Kitchen’s mission of empowering women to break free from poverty.

Grace Kitchen is a local nonprofit that works to provide women survivors of trafficking, addiction, homelessness and poverty with job and life skills for a hopeful future.
